Paving The Way for Victoria’s First Net Zero Community

July 2024

Earlier this year, we commenced construction on site at Highett Common, bringing residents one step closer to life at Victoria’s first medium-density net zero community...

This month, we caught up with our construction team at SK Construction to learn more about current developments on-site in Melbourne’s Bayside.

As of the end of June, all civil and infrastructure works reached a new milestone of 90 per cent completion, with works being continued on sub-base installation, and supplementary works being conducted on-site access roads including inground electrical infrastructure.

A key focus in this next stage of construction includes the installation of fundamental necessities on-site that will see the precinct begin to come to life and bring much-needed housing to Melbourne’s property market.

In June, finalisations on the site’s NBN plan and network design were submitted for approval, alongside compliance checks completed on the site’s main switchboard and sub-boards installed. These are key to ensuring that Highett Common remains a connected community precinct and meets our goal of creating an entirely electric development.

Complementing these additions, street light poles have also now been installed within the precinct, lighting the way for future elements of Highett Common.

Early Works

Our early works contractor partners at Delta Group remained on-site throughout June to oversee the final elements of early infrastructure works.

Extensive basement works are underway within the two apartment buildings making up Stage One at Highett Common. Wall concreting is at 80 per cent completion and waterproofing is ongoing at North Lane.

The primary work on-site continued to take strides in June following the official commencement of construction and the project’s sod-turning ceremony in May.

Marking a critical step in advancing progress on-site, this month saw the installation of precast columns as well as stair and lift shafts extending from the basements to the underside of the second levels.

The installation of precast components from level two to level four commenced on the 27th of June, marking another significant progression in the vertical construction of the building.

Additionally, the trade lettings process has reached approximately 60 per cent completion, indicating strong engagement with our trade partners. This progress ensures that we have the necessary resources and expertise to drive the project forward.

The project site office containers have also arrived on-site, and the construction of the office facilities has commenced. These offices will serve as the operational hub for our project management team and facilitate efficient coordination and communication.
